Thunderstone

Thunderstone is led by winemaker Tony Davis and wine farmer Redmond Sweeny. Together, they are shining a light on this rising star to create wines that are shaped by extremes, yet made with restraint.

Tony Davis has been waiting for this for 30 years. It’s where he cut his teeth – the vineyards at the base of the Porongurup range. The place that shaped his palate, sharpened his instincts, and taught him what it means to make wine with intention.

Redmond, who spent many endless summers in the Great Southern, brings a deep personal connection to the region – along with a restless, visionary energy. As he puts it, “great footballers run to where the ball is going, not where it’s been.” Thunderstone is a manifestation of that ethos – forward-thinking, grounded in place, and driven by instinct. Both return with Thunderstone – a project born not out of ambition, but out of gravity. It was always going to happen.

Thunderstone is anchored in the Porongurup range in Western Australia’s uber cool Great Southern. Remote, rugged, compressed, and largely untouched by commercialisation, the Porongurups are unlike anywhere else. At the western end of the range, towering karri forests in the national park give way to the granite peaks. To the east, the land falls away into mallee country, and only 30 km away lies the raw energy of the cool Southern Ocean. This isn’t a wine region built for scale –it’s a viticultural outpost. A patchwork quilt of tiny vineyards stitched along the skirt of an ancient and worn mountain.

There are no grand cellar doors. No tour buses. No trophy architecture. Just granite boulders older than our time, weathered stone valley slopes, and a quiet sense of place.

It’s wild, yes – but carries a deep, plutonic intention. It’s settled. And from this place of quiet resilience comes wine that speaks with clarity.
