ALKOOMI Frankland River

Red 5 Star Rated Winery – By James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2017

Alkoomi – the Aboriginal word meaning ‘a place we chose’ – is one of Australia’s largest family owned and
operated wine producers. The original 1220 hectare property was purchased by Sandy’s grandparents, and
initially operated as a mixed grain and livestock farm, in the cool yet sunny region of Frankland River, 330kms
south of Perth. Their son, Merv and daughter-in-law Judy, took over the property and in 1971 made the bold
decision to plant the very first vines. Since July 1st 2010, ownership was passed to the second generation –
daughter Sandy and son-in-law Rod, both of whom have been instrumental in the successful running of the
vineyard and winery for many years and who now oversee the substantial operation of modern winery, 102
ha of vines and a large olive grove.

BANNOCKBURN Geelong

Red 5 Star Rated Winery – By James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2017

Previous winemaker Michael Glover evolved and lifted this already legendary estate into a
far more site specific and Burgundy/Rhone like approach to vineyard management. Terroir is
taken very seriously indeed but without discounting quality for the sake of personality. Interim
winemaker Matt Holmes has taken on the principles of making wines with great diligence and
passion; orchestrating organic practice, a belief in dry-grown viticulture, vine age and close
planting . In the winery they favour wild ferments, use of whole bunches, extended maceration
times, extended lees contact and a fastidious barrel selection process to make wines that are
exciting, unique and clearly identifiable as “Bannockburn”.
Bannockburn Vineyards established by Stuart Hooper in 1974, is situated outside the township
of Bannockburn, Victoria. Over the past 4 decades Bannockburn has achieved a reputation for
handcrafting wines that are individual, complex and elegant. Wines which genuinely reflect the
flavours of highly regarded vineyards; wines which are produced with a purist, uncompromising
approach to winemaking.

CASTLE ROCK Porongurup

Red 5 Star Rated Winery – By James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2017

Towards the end of 1981 the 55 hectare property was specifically selected by the principals, Angelo
and Wendy Diletti, to grow premium quality table-wine grapes. The choice was based on the
altitude, well-drained soils and excellent water catchment potential. The vineyard is located on
Porongurup Road in the shire of Plantagenet. It is set high in the Porongurup Ranges, which are
40 km north of Western Australia’s south coast regional centre Albany. The altitude, 350 meters,
and the position of the vineyard, which exposes the vines to cooling south-east breezes results in
a prolonged growing season, enables the fruit to develop maximum varietal flavour and ripeness.

Winemaker Robert Diletti’s philosophy of wine making is to be as unobtrusive as possible. “The
wine quality is really determined in the vineyard”, says Robert. “I just try to make the wine that
portrays the fruit quality. There are several techniques which are important in doing this and you
need to know and understand these techniques. But we’re human, neither magicians nor “gods”. A
wine is made or not made, as the case may be, in the vineyard. That’s the great thing about being
part of a small family operation. I help in the vineyard with pruning etc. So I have a real sense of
helping to produce the wines from ‘go to whoa’”.

Rob has recently been named the inaugural winner of James Halliday’s Australian Wine Maker
of the Year for 2014.

CRITTENDEN ESTATE Mornington Pensinsula

Red 5 Star Rated Winery – By James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2017

First planted in 1982, Crittenden Estate is one of the Mornington Peninsula’s few multi generational
wineries. A true Family business, the father and son team of Garry and Rollo Crittenden draw
from nearly 50 years of combined experience to produce the regional stars of Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay, as well as emerging Spanish and Italian varieties from around Victoria under their
Los Hermanos and Pinocchio labels. Garry and Rollo have purchased several pieces additional
equipment to compliment that already held at the winery. Rollo’s desire to continually improve
and evolve will see the use of gentle Conveyor Belts instead of abrasive Augers and Must Pumps
in an effort to better handle the delicate tannin structure of Pinot Noir. Additionally, the facility’s
large cool-room is perfect for retaining aromatics in Chardonnay ferments, while the ability to
divide the barrel store into three separate sections will ensure ideal maturation conditions can be
maintained year round for all wine.

The contemporary packaging displays the personal style and panache of the Crittendens, with an
ethos of quality performing way beyond its price bracket.

DOMAINE A / STONEY VINEYARD Southern Tasmania

Red 5 Star Rated Winery – By James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2017

Domaine A / Stoney Vineyard is a 20ha property in the Coal River Valley of Southern Tasmania,
owned and operated by Peter and Ruth Althaus. Just half an hour’s drive from the city of Hobart,
it was originally planted with 0.5ha of noble grape varieties in 1973 by its former owners, Priscilla
and George Park. In 1989, inspired by the quality and potential of the site’s early wines the Althaus’
purchased Stoney Vineyard – the culmination of a long and exhaustive world-wide search for a site
ideally suited to cool-climate viticulture.

The valley enjoys a temperate maritime climate, with annual rainfall often less than 500mm. Long,
dry and mild growing seasons allow fruit from the property’s 11ha of closely planted vines to ripen
well into late April and early May, bringing to the wines aromas and flavours of great subtlety and
intensity.

The World’s top wine critics and experts on Domaine A & Stoney Vineyard:

FIRE GULLY Margaret River

4 Star Rated Winery – By James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2017

Fire Gully is what the French would call the second or sister wine of the iconic Pierro estate –
whom own and operate this small boutique vineyard located in the heart of Margaret River’s
renowned Willyabrup sub-region. Fire Gully is in the vanguard of premier wineries in the region
and consistently produces vibrant, fruit-driven wines of great elegance and style for drinking in
the short term. Situated in Western Australia’s deep southwest at latitude 34°south, Willyabrup
boasts a pristine, virtually pollution-free environment and gentle Mediterranean-maritime
climate, making the region ideal for the production of fine wines. A family run vineyard with
a focus on quality and value, the range is enjoyed throughout Australia and overseas, and offers
quintessentially Margaret River red and white styles. Dr Michael Peterkin of Pierro winery
purchased the nearby Fire Gully property in 1998, which is also one of the most beautiful and
unique properties on the Cape.

Mike Peterkin believes that it will one day produce fruit rival to that of Pierro vineyard. That’s a
big call but one that the quietly determined Michael Peterkin could just pull off. Since acquiring
Fire Gully, the vineyard has been tidied up and all trellising has been changed to Scott Henry to
give the fruit the maximum exposure to the sun. Like all the region’s best vineyards, Fire Gully
vineyard is planted on what is known as Willyabrup soil (gravely loam over friable clay with a
significant component of loose granite rock).

Larry Jacobs and Marc Dobson, both originally from South Africa where Larry established the Mulderbosch
Vineyards in the Stellenbosch and Marc was a journalist and copy writer, own the six hectare vineyard
located at the edge of the historic Hahndorf village in the Adelaide Hills.

They decided to specialise in the Austrian varieties of Gruner Veltliner and Blaufrankisch because of the
abundance of mineral components in the soil, the low January mean temperature and significantly high
diurnal variation. They also grow the more traditional varieties that shine in the Adelaide Hills, namely
Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Pinot Grigio as well as a Rose made from the Germanic grape, Trollinger and
other more traditional varities.

The vineyard is managed biodynamically and the wines made as natural as possible with minimal intervention.

LAKE'S FOLLY Hunter Valley

Red 5 Star Rated Winery – By James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2017

Australia’s first boutique winery, Lake’s Folly was established by Dr Max Lake and his family in
1963. Still family-owned, Peter Fogarty and his winemaker, Rodney Kempe, continue to maintain
the quality and integrity of this significant vineyard. Only two wines are made – a Cabernet blend
and a Chardonnay – in limited quantities. All are grown, vintaged and bottled on the Estate.
The wine styles are restrained and elegant, showing finesse and complexity. They have clarity of
structure and great length of flavour.

With a total production of a mere 4,500 cases, less then a quarter is Chardonnay. Lakes Folly
practice the KISS philosophy, producing only one red and one white. The most important aspect
is great fruit and attention to detail from vineyard to bottle with as little intervention possible.
In the vineyard, quality is derived primarily from the terroir. The old vines, now well and truly
self regulated to produce low cropping high quality fruit, are well established and give consistency
even in difficult years. The winemaking aspect is very simple. Hand picking, gentle crushing and
traditional open fermentation for the reds, barrel fermentation and extended yeast lees contact
for the Chardonnay. Judicious use of French oak, small barrel maturation for both, hand bottling
and that’s it, no more, no less.

PAXTON VINEYARDS McLaren Vale

Red 5 Star Rated Winery – By James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2017

David Paxton has been one of McLaren Vale’s most successful and well respected viticulturalists,
spanning 40 years. He started with a successful growing business in the late 1970’s which has
evolved into the premium wine business and renown 200 acres of vineyard sites that he has today.

There are seven vineyards in the family holdings: the Thomas Block with 125 yr old vines (28ha),
the Jones Block (22ha), Quandong Farm (19ha), Landcross Farm (2ha) and Maslin Vineyard
(3.5ha) and the 19th Hole and Gateway vineyards. All are certified biodynamic with conversion of
the entire estate from 2004, making Paxton one of the largest biodynamic producers in Australia.

Winemaker Richard Freebairn joined Paxton in 2014 from Serafino Wines where he was
instrumental in helping them win trophies for Tempranillo and Grenache. Richard worked in
Margaret River, Swan Valley and Sonoma Valley before moving to the Barossa Valley where he
worked with superstars Stuart Blackwell, Tim Smith and Matt Gant before becoming Assistant
Winemaker at Jim Barry Wines in the Clare Valley.

Our winemaking style is simply described as ‘minimal intervention’ to allow the fruit do the
talking. Our wines are more restrained & elegant in approach with pronounced sumptuous fruit
on the palate. Not overly extracted or over-the-top in overall flavour and body weight. More of a
classic Rhone-style approach to Shiraz & Grenache & slightly lower in alcohol.

We are 100% estate grown fruit, from the seven single vineyard sites across our 200 acre estate,
we use a balance of new and used American & French Oak. We practice minimal intervention
in our winemaking & use wild yeasts in our SVS range and some natural fining as well. We use
minimal sulphites, half the industry average and practice natural wine making principles across
the board.

PEEL ESTATE Peel Region

4 Star Rated Winery – By James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2017

Established in 1973 by Will Nairn when at age 40, he stopped farming lucerne at his Baldivis property and made the
risky decision to plant a vineyard. He has never looked back! The estate is now into its 35th vintage and has no peer
in the region with its specialities – Shiraz, Wood Matured Chenin Blanc and Zinfandel.

The Peel wine region is very large and extends from Rockingham to south of Mandurah and to the Darlin Scarp east
through to the shire of Waroona. The soils around the area range from limestone sands through to granite clays. Peel
Estate is located in the limestone sands area and it is here where a number of grape varieties thrive. As well as those
mentioned above, Verdelho and Cabernet Sauvignon make outstanding wines. For a point of difference, Will has Portuguese
red varieties planted for a vintage fortified wine, plus two sparkling wines – one of Chenin, reminiscent of the Vouvray’s of
the Loire Valley and a Sparkling Shiraz.

Will Nairn has been the recipient of the Di Cullen Award at the Wine Industry Awards in 2006 and the Jack Mann

PIERRO Margaret River

Red 5 Star Rated Winery – By James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2017

The Pierro vineyard is the first of the new generation vineyards at Margaret River where the technology
of the new world is combined with the traditions of the old world. The vineyard was established in 1980
on the banks of Willyabrup Brook, in one of the most beautiful locations in the district. The 15 acres of
grapevines are set in 65 acres of undulating bushland, with both the Willyabrup Brook and Red Brook both
running through the property. Owner and winemaker, Dr Michael Peterkin graduated in medicine from the
University of WA in 1972. He then attended Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1976 and 1977 and gained
a degree in grape growing and winemaking.

Mike bought Pierro in 1979, which was merely a scrubby, rocky block. However he judged it to be the
finest block in the district, with it’s northerly aspect, creek and laterite gravel soil. He was anything but
conventional when it came to establishing Pierro. In fact, in many areas of the vineyard he went completely
against the customary methodology. From day one he has had firm – and sometimes contrary – views on
vineyard management. Mike is pro irrigation as he believes over the summer months before harvest in
Margaret River, vines close down for long periods during the day and controlled watering will avert this.
Unlike a number of other vineyards in the region he planted north-south orientated vine rows, which
he judged would receive up to 20% more sunlight. He also introduced vines with half the normal width
between the rows and two-thirds the breadth. This was to make the vines more competitive, balance their
fruit yield and promote flavour intensity. Soil, aspect, and a high number of vines per hectare are the critical
factors for achieving high quality at Pierro. The vines all face the sun on the mid to low slopes of the rolling
gravel hills formed by the dissecting creek system.

SOUTH GIPPSLAND WINE COMPANY Gippsland

4 Star Rated Winery – By James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2017

This project started in the early 1990’s by a group of Melbourne based wine enthusiasts who shared the
common goal of creating Burgundian style wines in Australia. Vineyard sites around the town of Leongatha
were acquired and planted with the first vintage being produced in 1999.

In 2008, winemaking lecturer and industry consultant, Mark Matthews joined Caledonia Australis in the
dual role of vineyard manager and winemaker and very soon after acquired the major vineyards from the
partnership. In 2009 Mark acquired the brand names and the stock making ownership a family affair with
wife Marianna who until recently held the position of ‘Global Insights and Planning Manager’ at Treasury
Wine Estates.
The 30 acres of close planted dry grown vineyards are an average of 18 years old with the Chardonnay block
certified Grade A organic. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are currently planted and a new block of Gruner
Veltliner will be ready for it first commercial crop in 2017.

Caledonia Australis:
Made unashamedly in an old world style, hand harvested with fruit cropping levels always below 2 tonne
to the acre. The wines are made with minimal additives and intervention with the primary focus of the end
product being texture and structure. Natural fermentation occurs and the wines are placed in a mixture of
new, one and two year old barrels.

Mount Macleod:
These wines are defined by the purity of fruit with as little winemaking intervention or oak influence as
possible. Primary and malolactic fermentation occur naturally and the wines are generally given 12 to 16
months in previous use oak with light lees contact.

TEUSNER Barossa Valley

Red 5 Star Rated Winery – By James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2017

To anyone that has met Kym Teusner and Mick Page, it would come as no surprise to discover that Teusner
Wines was conceived over a few beers at the local pub. An overseas study trip and a few vintages working
for other wineries back home had filled them both with a love for old vine Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz.
Then a chanced overheard conversation between a couple of Barossa grape growers about an old vineyard
facing the chop demanded they come up with a rescue plan. Scratching together a bit of cash, the fruit
found a new home, the old vines stayed in the ground where they belonged and Teusner Wines came to life.

Teusner’s philosophy comes down to three simple words. True. Righteous. Pleasure.

Be true to the growers and reward their hard work by paying them well. Let the righteous flavours found
in the old Barossa vineyards take center stage in the wines. Bring pleasure to those that put their hand in
their pocket to buy them. It’s a simple approach, but one that has gained Teusner an army of fans and had
the commentators and critics singing the praises of his wines as modern day benchmarks for the Barossa.

TOURNON by M. Chapoutier Pyrenees/Heathcote

Seeking excellence in the land Down Under, in 2009 Michel Chapoutier bought two new vineyards
(Shays Flat Estate and Landsborough Valley Estate) in the Victorian Pyrenees to set up the fully owned
label, Tournon. Michel recognized two unique terroirs that would allow him to make distinctive
wines utilizing the Syrah/Shiraz grape that originates in his homeland.

A southern extension of the Great Dividing Range, The Pyrenees foothills and ranges create a
remarkable diversity of microclimates and soils that provide wealth of variety for winemakers.
The cool weather patterns and unique soil in this region are an ideal place for the development of
Chapoutier’s biodynamic winegrowing philosophy, and of extending Rhône traditions.

Like in Hermitage, Michel’s challenge is to show the diversity of this area by producing racy Shiraz
from different type of soils. In addition to Shiraz, Michel had Chardonnay and Riesling planted.
